| New Zealand University Testing Timber that Stands Up to Earthquakes |

| New science out of New Zealand may soon shed light on multi-story timber buildings able to withstand earthquakes. The University of Canterbury is sponsoring the testing of cross laminated timber in within a low damage structural system in the hopes that the results will prove successful. ``This is the first time in the world that anyone has done this. Cross laminated timber (CLT) panels are a new product to New Zealand, which started up at a Nelson factory last year,'' explains the University's researcher, Andrew Dunbar. | Lumber futures closed up Friday on mixed buying. Prices advanced for the third consecutive day in both the soon to be "spot" July and the lead September contracts. Profit taking short covering and technical buying took lumber higher. Commercial hedgers and speculative funds covered short positions to bank profits and or rolled contracts forward via the spreads. Increased cash activity at attractive discounts as well as the front two contracts closing above the 200 month moving average of $285.50 led the buying. ...Click here to read the rest of this article. |
