Mixed wood veneer
The veneering portion is done so I am posting these as finished. I was laid off a couple months ago and received a lovely overly full box of mixed wood veneer as a Valentines Day gift from my ever patient boyfriend. These are three pieces that I have hand cut and pieced together. They may eventually be hung up as is or be merged into box tops. I have been teaching myself this process by looking through books, searching the web, and watching videos. I just started doing this in February. So far my main tools are an exacto and a cutting mat. While I have coping and veneer saws, I am preferring this way since I am only currently doing one of each, I don't want the extra waste.
The gradiated piece is a test run for a 6' version I am working on for a wall hanging. Each square is .5" x .5". The big version will consist of 3" x 3" pieces with the addition of some various size circles. I believe it has at least 8 different varieties of wood with some woods be represented multiple times but in different grain patterns. I did not wet it for the photo since this was done with hide glue. I am not adding a final finish until the final presentation form is decided on,
The "Frank turned loose with an exacto and wood veneer piece" consists of scraps of veneer from various projects. I was bored and decided to straighten some edges and start gluing, standard wood glue was used. This will end up in the hands of my "pops" who was an architect.
Final piece is a square image with a basic star, I was expirementing with using a paper puncher on veneer to punch holes and then refill it with a different wood. I found it works best when painters tape is on one side to help strengthen the wood. Lot of splinters otherwise, I know there is maple, cuchiwood, and mahogany in this. The darkest portion I am unsure of. Contact cement was used even though this is raw unpacked wood. I went with this method simply because of being able to control my results more. This was also my first time with using veneer tape. I did wet this piece for the photo.
Enjoy.
