Hope chest, I hope it has a bright future.

Hope chest, I hope it has a bright future.

This is a Hope Chest i made for my best friends little brother. He has always been like a little brother so when we got the invite i knew I wanted to build something special. After much searching I found out that this is a traditional wedding present, to be filled with memories made while married. Its made from beetle kill pine i bought from the local sawmill. Hard to fine wood with enough of the blue and white marbling. But i got it rough cut and brought it home planed and joined it and got some nice square edges. I laminated the boards together and used a dovetail jig to hold the box and base together. The bottom was simple it was glued into a rabbet and screwed in place. The top was made the same way. I found a complimentary blue felt and spray glued it in. I finished it with four coats of laquer. When it was done i wood burned their new last name and the date of their wedding on to a plaque and screwed it to the front and plugged the holes so they were almost invisible (not pictured). When i gave it to them I wasn't sure if they liked it but soon after I overheard the bride and groom telling a guest home much they loved it. A couple moths later the bride posted a pic on fb in its new home and the caption "my favorite wedding present". It really made me happy, Im fairly new to wood working with only about a year of doing it at this time. At the time it was about 6 months.Very rewarding project.
