VIDEO         PLANS & PROJECTS        HOW-TO         WORKSHOP         TOOL GUIDE
Let’s face it, cutting dovetails by hand takes a great deal of time, patience, and skill. So when faced with a daunting amount of dovetails, furnituremaker Gregory Paolini turns to his tablesaw. Paolini uses a standard rip blade in combination with two tall auxiliary fences attached to a standard miter gauge. The technique yields accurate dovetail joinery with a hand-cut look. What’s more, you’ll have very minimal chisel work to do after your workpieces come off the saw.

In this short video, Fine Woodworking special projects editor Matt Kenney demonstrates Paolini’s technique, guiding you through every step of the process. Matt will be at Fine Woodworking Live signing copies of his new book 52 Boxes in 52 Weeks. It goes on sale in the Taunton Store on May 8th, 2018, but is available for preorder now.

Get Sharp - Fast

Sharpening doesn’t have to be frustrating and mysterious. You can get and keep a keen edge on handplane blades and chisels and you don’t have to break the bank to do it. Deneb Puchalski, Lie-Nielsen’s sharpening expert, shares the method he has been teaching at workshops across the country, using a honing guide, sandpaper, waterstones, a ruler, and a shopmade sharpening station.

Scribe your tablesaw’s throat plate for quicker crosscuts

When crosscutting with the miter gauge, you have to turn off the saw and let the blade come to a full stop in order to accurately align it with a layout mark on the workpiece. But two simple scribe marks on the tablesaw’s throat plate let you line up a mark perfectly without hitting the off button.
