VIDEO         PLANS & PROJECTS        HOW-TO         WORKSHOP         TOOL GUIDE

Getting through-mortises perfectly aligned on each side of a board can be tricky business. Any misalignment can wreak havoc on your joints and cause unsightly gaps on the finished piece. In this excerpt from Mike Pekovich’s Video Workshop series on building a Glass-Front Cabinet, you’ll learn how simple blue painter's tape can assist you in laying out perfectly aligned through-mortises for a crisp and tight fitting joint.

Mike will be a featured presenter at Fine Woodworking Live 2018, demonstrating his Practical Guide to Layout. While a lot of us may stress out at the thought of cutting joinery by hand, the real challenge is in the layout. You can hit your mark with a saw or chisel, but if the mark isn’t in the right place, you’ll be left with a headache, and a lot of work ahead of you. Mike will cover the layout process he’s developed that ensures accurate joinery with the least amount of fussing around. In addition, Mike will show you some simple aids that will help you lay out perfect joinery quickly and easily. Register now to save $50 with our early bird rate!

Jointer Tune-up

Fine Woodworking’s former shop manager, John White, dissects the jointer and explains its parts and how to tune it up. White takes you through four steps: adjusting the gibs, leveling the tables, squaring the fence, and setting the knives. He also explains how to level the tables with a shopmade test bar, how to fix a crooked fence, and how to replace a spring or jackscrew on a cutterhead.
