Heirloom Kid Benches
I generally ask my wife what she want me to build next and she generally says "whatever you want" but this time when I asked her she said she wanted some benches for the grandkids that would match her oak kitchen table so the benches could remain in place on the wall side of the table and when the grandkids visited she could simply pull the table out and the grandkids would have a place to sit. I then pulled out my old magazine with bench plans and let her pick out the bench she wanted. She selected the bench in Wood Magazine issue July 2011. Of course I had to modify it slightly by reducing the width of the bench but everything else was the same except I used pocket screws to attach the shelves to the side.
I had read articles on finishing furniture prior to assembly so I tried this procedure on these benches. I thought since there were few parts and all flat, these benches would be a good first try. Picture 5 depicts the hooks and the tape joint after removing the tape, it sure did make it easy to sand. Also another first was spray painting shellac on the boards. All of my prior furniture was finished with 3 coats of shellac and 3 or 4 coats of poly varnish brushed on, but this time I wanted to try spraying on the shellac (Photo 4) and not using any varnish so that what I did and I think it worked well but it did seems to use more material for the 7 coats applied.
I finished the oak off with a paste wax. I bet they will like the hidden compartment the best.
